Mifepristone

The Upcoming Supreme Court Case on Medicated Abortion Affects All of Us.

Soon, the Supreme Court will deliberate on the future of Mifepristone. We anticipate they will uphold a lower court decision greatly restricting Mifepristone’s accessibility and revoking its F.D.A. approval. Such an outcome would require additional in-person doctors visits for a person to acquire the drug, and it would lower the window of access from 10 weeks to only 7 weeks into pregnancy. Online ordering, mail delivery, and pharmacy dispensing of Mifepristone would also be heavily restricted. The intent of conservatives pushing this court case is to deny millions of Americans their right to medication abortion.

“This medication helps to stop a pregnancy and to get the body ready for the second pill, Misoprostol, which is used to complete the abortion process. These pills can be taken in the comfort of your own home. They’re safer than Tylenol and Viagra, and super effective.”

-Carolyn Handke, MNAAC Member

Mifepristone is used in over half of U.S. abortions.

Medication like Mifepristone makes the process of getting an abortion much easier, which is why it’s used by millions of Americans. In states where abortion is banned or restricted, mail-ordering of abortion pills is often the only way for individuals to get an abortion.

In Minnesota, that number is even higher.

While many Minnesotans may feel comfortable knowing abortion rights are codified in our state constitution, this upcoming ruling on Mifepristone poses a huge threat to Minnesotans’ access to reproductive healthcare.
